Teaching Philosophy Some become teachers for a career, others become teachers because it’s their passion. That is the difference between good and poor quality teachers. Being able to teach art to students of all ages is my dream job. I love art and being able to create something out of what was once nothing. My goal as an artist is to teach my love for art to others. I want people to understand and appreciate art and all its beauties. Being an art teacher is the perfect way to accomplish this goal.
As an art educator, I want to help students believe that anyone can be “good” at art and that art isn’t just about being able to copy something and make it look realistic. Many students are discouraged because they feel like they can’t be successful at making artwork. This attitude usually stems from past experiences where they were put down for their lack of skill. Some think that art is a talent that some people are born with, and some will never be able to be successful. I believe that art is just like any other skill, such as a sport, math, or reading, and takes practice. I will help students look at art with a different perspective that allows them to see the meaning and emotion behind artwork. Once they are able to see that, they can work to reflect it in their own artwork. Every student deserves a right to a good education that meets his or her own personal needs. No matter the student’s ability, I want to be able to cater to his or her needs and make sure they are getting the most out of my teaching. In my classroom, I will try my hardest to create an environment where students can feel comfortable and have a positive place to learn. This type of atmosphere is very important for an art classroom. Art is where students need to feel free to express themselves without fear of judgment by their peers and also their teacher. To create this type of environment, the first and most important aspect is respect. I will act in a professional manner that students can respect and know that I am not a “friend,” but a professional in my field. I believe that |
in order to gain respect as a teacher, I also need to respect my students. Everyone has a voice that needs to be heard, and art class is one of the few places where students can express that.
In today’s society, people think art isn’t as important as the core subject areas, and it is just a fun class to take. Art is an essential part of a student’s education. Students need to develop their creativity to help them in every other aspect of their lives. Developing creativity helps us to be critical thinkers, and to solve problems not only in the classroom, but also in everyday life. Art creates confidence in students. When they feel free to express their emotions, they can accomplish artwork that they can be proud of. My ultimate goal is to be a teacher that students look up to and will remember in a way that will have a positive impact on their life. |
